Terpenes are a group of organic compounds commonly found in plants and are primarily responsible for the aromatic characteristics of cannabis. While cannabinoids are often assumed to be the sole inducer of marijuana’s therapeutic effects, terpenes have been shown to interact in symbiotic conjunction with cannabinoids (i.e. the ‘entourage effect’) to enhance the plant’s medicinal properties. Check out the guide below to learn about some of the terpenes we test for and what their known attributes are.

α-Pinene

The most abundant terpene in the plant kingdom, α-Pinene is an aromatic compound that can be found in coniferous trees (most notably the pine tree), rosemary, and thyme. In cannabis, the presence of this terpene can often be identified by its strong earthy and piney scent. Available research has indicated many health benefits including:

  • Anti-inflammatory properties
  • Bronchodilator (opens airway passage and increases airflow to the lungs)
  • Aids with memory
  • Promotes alertness
Limonene

A major constituent of lemons and limes, Limonene can easily be distinguished in cannabis by its citrusy aroma. Some medicinal properties include:

  • Anti-anxiety
  • Antidepressant
  • Antifungal
  • Antibacterial
  • Elevates mood
  • Relieves acid reflux

Myrcene

The most abundant terpene found in cannabis, Myrcene can easily be distinguished by its musky, earthy, and herbal aroma that is also prevalent in hops. Due to its relaxing and sedative properties, high levels of Myrcene (approximately >0.5%) have been associated with the “couch lock” feeling many users experience. Some known medicinal properties include:

  • Sedative (relieves insomnia)
  • Analgesic
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antibiotic

Linalool

Found commonly in plants such as lavender, coriander, and mint, Linalool is used extensively in scented hygiene / cleaning products due to its sweet aroma. Unsurprisingly, Linalool can easily be identified in cannabis by its delicate floral tones. Some medicinal properties include:

  • Sedative (relieves insomnia)
  • Anesthetic
  • Anti-anxiety
  • Anti-convulsant
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Analgesic (relieves pain)
